Located approximately 600 miles southeast of Miami, Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory comprised of forty islands and cays, of which eight are inhabited. With the third largest coral reef system in the world and a plethora of white sand beaches and nature reserves, these islands have become a major upscale Caribbean destination in the last decade.
Known for clear waters that make it a prime diving and sportfishing destination, Turks and Caicos or the “TCI” is also home to Grace Bay, often ranked as one of the best beaches in the world. Tourism in Turks and Caicos began relatively recently; the islands were initially inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians and were, subsequently under Spanish, French and British control before being settled by Bermudian salt rakers. The tourism boom started in the early 1980s with the opening of the Club Med Turkoise Resort in Providenciales and has been going strong ever since, with new luxury resorts opening regularly.
