The Bahamas is an independent nation, comprised of 700 islands and 2,000 cays, in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Florida. Its most populous island is New Providence, home to the capital city of Nassau. Other favorite tourist destinations in the Bahamas include Grand Bahama Island and the less-populated string of islands known as the Out Islands, which includes Bimini, Eleuthera, The Exumas and The Abacos.
Cool trade winds and serene waters make the Bahamas a preferred sailing and water sports destination. The vast array of marine life makes it a favorite for snorkelers, divers, and deep-sea fishing. Historic attractions, botanical gardens and national parks with rare and endangered plants and wildlife attract vacationers and nature lovers alike.
