Lady Liberty Embodies Heritage and History
Weighing 225 tons and measuring 151 feet from foot to flame, Lady Liberty is one woman you shouldn’t miss seeing during your stay in New York City. Jump on a ferry (one leaves from Battery Park every 30 minutes) to explore this colossal gift from France. Check out the statue’s museum, which is located inside the pedestal, to view the original flame (replaced by a gold-covered one in 1986), full-scale replicas of Lady Liberty’s feet and face and sketches by the statue’s sculptor, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. If you plan to ascend the 354 steps to the crown to experience the stunning harbor views, reserve your tickets well in advance. Only 10 people are allowed up the narrow winding staircase every hour. A stop at Ellis Island is also included in the ticket price. Cavernous and expansive, this interactive New York museum sheds light on how millions of American immigrants came to set foot on U.S. soil. It’s a true American history lesson in a classic New York setting.
