Travel a little farther uptown from the Great White Way and you’ll find the Tony winning musical South Pacific playing at the Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre. This Rodger’s and Hammerstein production won the 2008 Tony award for best musical revival and the 40 person cast is sure to both make you laugh and tug at your heartstrings. Set during World War II on a lush island in the South Pacific, this romantic musical centers on the relationships of two couples. The first is Lieutenant Joe Cable and a young Polynesian girl, Liat. The second is Navy nurse, Nellie Forbush and a French plantation owner Emile de Becque. The couples’ lives become entwined when the men are sent away on a mission and only one man returns. The lauded score, which is performed by a 30-piece orchestra, features such crowd pleasers as “I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair”, “Bali Ha'I”, and “Some Enchanted Evening.” With its wartime theme, South Pacific is just as poignant as it was when it first opened in 1949 and is still a delight to see performed on stage. An added bonus for design buffs: the play is performed in a theater that was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, with an interior done by Tony Award winning set designer, Jo Mielziner.
