If you are on the market for a dress that you can be sure no one else will be wearing, look no further than EMc2. Owned by Emmett McCarthy, the Project Runway Season 2 alum was inspired to open his boutique after reconnecting with Tim Gunn during filming, and even sells a line of Tim Gunn bobbleheads to pay homage to his mentor.
The design school educated Emmett McCarthy first moved to New York during the height of 80s grandeur, and was inspired by the fashion choices of party-goers like Cyndi Lauper. McCarthy continues to get inspiration from vintage pieces today, while re-imaging them in a way to make them timeless and classic. All of his clothing is designed and made in Manhattan, which helps perfect the designer’s vision of quality pieces for every taste level.
The store itself is nestled in the trendy Nolita neighborhood, in a charming building with metal details, where visitors can peer through the window into a meticulously laid out boutique. With a clear eye for design, little nooks hold shoes and handbags that McCarthy makes with the same care as his one-of-a-kind Audrey Hepburn inspired dresses.
Lady-like details abound, from the storefront window displays to the clasps on his garments, but the true goal of the store is to create a hands-on experience for the designer and customer alike. Walking towards the dressing room at the back of the store, McCarthy interacts with his customer and gets feedback, while at the same time finding their perfect piece and suggesting accessories to bring the outfit together. You won’t find this kind of attention anywhere else.
