A stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge followed by the reward of Grimaldi’s pizza is a quintessential New York City experience for locals and visitors alike. The towering bridge, which opened in 1883 and links Manhattan and Brooklyn, has become one of the most iconic symbols of the city, and with good reason. The walk across, which takes about 30 minutes, is easy; the bridge slopes gently up and then back down. Of course, with the cinematic views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River, you may find yourself stopping quite a bit along the way to take photos. Start the walk at the path just across the street from City Hall in Manhattan. Make your way across alongside other walkers, runners and cyclists. When you touch down in Brooklyn, head toward the water to Old Fulton Street, where you’ll find the famed pizza shop Grimaldi’s. Many locals consider its thin-crust, coal-fired brick oven pies the best pizza in New York, as evidenced by the ever-present line of customers out front. Expect to wait an hour or more to get in. After you’ve sampled this little slice of heaven, head into the funky DUMBO neighborhood (its name stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). You’ll find chic clothing boutiques, high-end furniture stores, one of famed chocolatier Jacques Torres’ eponymous sweets shops, and more great views from Brooklyn Bridge Park.
