Spending lazy days on the beach may be all you want to do on a Mexico vacation, but those yearning for a change of pace head to Playa del Carmen in the heart of the Riviera Maya for a bit of culture and sophistication. A former fishing village, “Playa,” as the locals call it, is small enough to be explored on foot. A stroll through the streets reveals a blend of Mexican and Mayan architecture, both in historic and contemporary structures. The main square, El Zocalo, has several notable design features including a series of modern stone arches, fountains and sculptures. Along the streets of Playa are also several picturesque chapels and religious buildings. Nearby, the ruins at Playacar are an excellent example of ancient Mayan architecture. Several public and private structures comprise the site, set amongst lush mangroves and foliage.
The main drag, Quinta Avenida, runs parallel to the beach. A pedestrian walkway, “5th Avenue” is lined with cosmopolitan restaurants and cafes, boutiques and shops selling all manner of clothes, accessories, local handicrafts, souvenirs and artwork. After the sun goes down Quinta Avenida is the epicenter of the nightlife scene; lounges and clubs are packed with international travelers dancing and partying the night away.
Those seeking to experience the unique and vibrant cultural aspects of the Mayan Riviera need look no further than Playa del Carmen. This former fishing village is now a cosmopolitan destination in its own right with both modern shops, restaurants and nightlife as well as cultural heritage and history around every corner.
