Cancun Markets

Cancun, Mexico

Nowhere is the hustle and bustle of Cancun better experienced than at its open-air marketplaces. Locals and tourists alike flock to these colorful bazzars to pick up everything from batteries to jewelry and sugary confections to woven textiles. In the heart of the Hotel Zone, easily reached by foot, is the Coral Negro Market. Open daily, Coral Negro is home to about 50 stalls, and is a great attraction to visit for both adults and families with little ones. Kitschy souvenirs such as overly ornate sombreros and figurines are hawked along side blankets, textiles and traditional Mexican candies. While Coral Negro is lively, it is also manageable in size, easily explored in an hour or so. Shopping experts looking to test their endurance and negotiating skills can make their way a bit further inland to Mercado 28. Boasting over 100 stalls, this maze-like market is in the middle of Downtown Cancun. Besides selling the usual touristy trinkets, Mercado 28 also has several notable leather goods stalls, jewelry vendors and some high-quality local pottery and handicrafts. Expert bargainers can often negotiate large discounts, and the vendors expect it. It’s all part of the experience. Mercado 28 is also home to cafes selling delicious authentic Mexican dishes like tacos and fresh seafood, which is helpful considering it can take hours to make your way through the entire market. At both Coral Negro and Mercado 28, the best deals can often be found a bit deeper into the markets rather than along the outside, and, bargaining gets a bit easier as the day goes on and vendors are looking to move their wares.
