Akumal

Riviera Maya, Mexico

About an hour drive south of Cancun lies the small seaside town of Akumal. A picturesque white archway on the road denotes the entrance to this charming village. Akumal’s hotels and restaurants line the white sand beach, bordered by a lush mangrove jungle. The main attraction is the incredible snorkeling just offshore; Akumal is Mayan for “Place of the Turtles” and it is common to spot these majestic creatures while snorkeling or diving. Both of the dive shops in town rent snorkeling and Scuba equipment, and visitors can snorkel from any point along the beach or book a guide. We recommend snorkeling right from the beach behind funky restaurant La Buena Vida. This popular spot is surrounded by swaying palms, has swings instead of barstools, and has an eclectic “day of the dead” themed décor. About 20 meters off the hammock lined beach are large vibrant coral reefs with countless colorful fish and marine plant life. The waters are calm and warm, ideal for swimmers of all levels and children. Because of the lush jungle just inland, Akumal is also a popular spot for bird watching; one of the best places is the picturesque Yalku Lagoon. This small town also boasts some of the best sport fishing. April through July many avid anglers visit for the catch and release sport fishing. Naturally formed limestone freshwater sinkholes called cenotes surround Akumal town. Swimming in the cool waters and exploring these underwater caverns is another “must-do.” There are several hotels in town, but Akumal is most popular as a day-trip destination.

Known for the Best Snorkeling Around

About 60 miles south of Cancun, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, lies the small seaside town of Akumal. Akumal is Mayan for “Place of the Turtles” as it is a major nesting site for the reptiles. Once an ancient Mayan seaport and trading route, Akumal has many beaches, mangroves and small lagoons that are ideal for partaking in the area’s main attraction—snorkeling. Divers flock here to explore the beauty of Akumal Bay’s and Half Moon Bay’s spectacular reef system, underwater coral gardens and sunken Spanish galleon. Dive shops in town provide snorkeling and scuba rental equipment and guidebooks. Because of the lush jungle just inland, Yalku Lagoon in Akumal is also a popular and picturesque spot for bird watching. This small town also boasts some of the best sport fishing around.

Naturally formed limestone freshwater sinkholes called cenotes surround Akumal. Swimming in the cool waters and exploring these underwater caverns is a “must-do” adventure included in jungle tours.
