Don’t be fooled: At Port Royal Golf Course, looks can be deceiving. The panoramic vistas are dazzling, but will quickly lull you into a sense of false confidence. Rest assured, many a great golfer has come before you and been humbled by these trim fairways.
Designed in 1970 by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Port Royal continues to earn accolades as one of the top public courses in the world. A recent and impressive overhaul expanded the course to 6,842 yards, making it the longest in Bermuda. The most dramatic changes include a complete re-sowing of the fairways, roughs and tee boxes with 419 Bermuda grass, and a number of trees have been removed making sightlines even trickier.
Without a doubt the most lauded, most photographed and most feared stretch on the course is the par-3 on the 16th. Reportedly Jack Nicklaus’ favorite, the tee and green are separated by a craggy ocean gap, which requires a near perfect shot to navigate. Luckily there is a resident pro on hand who can help you plan your strategy during a one-on-one session.
After the game, you’ll be eager to toast your success or drown your humility at the Club House with either a tall pint or a spot of tea in the English tradition. After that, Greg’s Steakhouse serves up hearty fare sure to satisfy your hard-earned appetite.
