Wedges and Waves

Port Royal Golf Club, Bermuda

Wedges and Waves Video duration – 5.07 minutes Port Royal Golf Southampton, Bermuda Guy Stuff – Golf Bill Pitt, General Manager People, who’ve never been to Bermuda, need to experience it. We have wonderful golf courses and most of all, we have wonderful beaches. Everyone don’t talk about our beaches but some of the beautiful ocean, corals that you see and long beaches, nothing but the best. You can come here with the best of them all. Port Royal was built to accommodate the general public and it opened in 1970. The government prepared the design of a luxury golf course that’s part of its operations along with St. George’s golf course. Most people that come here think it’s private or semi- private. The government really takes care of the golf course as their gem. It tests the best of them all and with the new renovation program they put in place; it’s no doubt that we have the best conditions around in Bermuda. The PGA grand slam of golf has been awarded to Port Royal for the next two years. Prior to that it was held at the Mid Ocean Club, it was very successful. This would be the first time, a PGA event of this magnitude will be held at Port Royal Golf Course. We are proud and honored to host them come October 19th to the 21st. My favorite memory of the golf course is that I can remember when it was built, what it looked like and I can remember now what it looks like with the new renovation and um I must say, the new conditions that we have now, new irrigation, TifEagle greens, 419 Bermuda throughout, it’s going to be one of the fabulous golf courses of the world. Eric West, Head Golf Professional We got more golf courses per square mile than anywhere else in the world and I’d say probably more quality golf courses per square mile than most places. Mid Ocean and Port Royal two…them being two of the best golf courses in the world, you know 10 miles apart and that is pretty rare in the world. You know just to have, for a tourist facility to have as many golf courses as we do, they are quality arrayed on the water, everything’s pretty special here. My favorite holes here is really number four, it’s a 440 yard par four to the right most awkward holes I’ve ever played. It’s just good in an awkward way; it just makes you hit every shot perfectly. If you don’t hit a shot perfectly you’re going to make bogey. Drive needs to be perfect, second shot needs to be perfect and then you know the greens are very small so you need to be good at your chipping if you miss the green. The other is number. 16, probably our trademark golf hole, we’ve moved it from 175 yards to about 240 yards, so as you can see the tee box now is lower and more out over the water. When you get forced to hit around this curve here the wind comes off the cliff so it’s 240 yards of wind and water, very difficult. Let me show you a couple of tips of how to deal with this hole so you can make par. So we’re here at the 16th hole of Port Royal Golf Course, it’s a beautiful day. As you see over my right shoulder, it’s the 16th green some 240 yards away from this black tee. Over my left shoulder, the blue tee which plays at 186 yards, the white tee which plays at 168 yards, the women’s tee which is 160 yards and the senior tee which is about 155 yards. So what I’m going to try to do here is explain to you how to hit a cut off the coast back into the fence because the wind hits the side of the cliff which doesn’t push the ball back into the green and actually makes you draw it into the water. Pretty good shot, that’s how it is done. Hope that you can do the same thing. Marshlene Moniz, Golf Assistant I love everything about Bermuda, the people, the island it’s beautiful, friendly faces…it’s just a great place to be. I met a lot of people here so far including Eric. We’re out here to make a golf pro out of me. I’m just telling you know enjoy yourself, how beautiful the island is…people like to see a friendly face when they come here and no one’s come on vacation to “amusez-vous” you know what I mean, so I try to make their time at the golf course as friendly and as comfortable as possible. So if I could do that then fine for me. Alright so that’s how you hit a cut shot into the 16th at Port Royal. Hope to see you down here soon and hope you have a good time playing.

Impressive Views, Stunning Landscape and Pitch-Perfect Fairways

Don’t be fooled: At Port Royal Golf Course, looks can be deceiving. The panoramic vistas are dazzling, but will quickly lull you into a sense of false confidence. Rest assured, many a great golfer has come before you and been humbled by these trim fairways.

Designed in 1970 by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Port Royal continues to earn accolades as one of the top public courses in the world. A recent and impressive overhaul expanded the course to 6,842 yards, making it the longest in Bermuda. The most dramatic changes include a complete re-sowing of the fairways, roughs and tee boxes with 419 Bermuda grass, and a number of trees have been removed making sightlines even trickier.

Without a doubt the most lauded, most photographed and most feared stretch on the course is the par-3 on the 16th. Reportedly Jack Nicklaus’ favorite, the tee and green are separated by a craggy ocean gap, which requires a near perfect shot to navigate. Luckily there is a resident pro on hand who can help you plan your strategy during a one-on-one session.

After the game, you’ll be eager to toast your success or drown your humility at the Club House with either a tall pint or a spot of tea in the English tradition. After that, Greg’s Steakhouse serves up hearty fare sure to satisfy your hard-earned appetite.
