Elevation and location are the advantages at this par 54 course that overlooks The Fairmount Southampton’s tree-lined oceanfront. Designed by Theodore Robinson, the challenging 18 holes that dramatically rise and fall are alluring to those looking to work on their short game (the drop on the first two holes alone is close to 200 feet). However, it’s the third hole that really sets this site apart. Known as the “Kodak hole,” the picturesque backdrop includes a lake, fountain and turquoise-blue ocean views, making this a popular spot for photos. More important though, the cup boasts more holes-in-one than anywhere else on the course. At 142 yards over the water, the 125 carry is partly thanks to the natural wind found this high up. Bunkered on both sides, this is a well- guarded hole too. Golf pro Stewart Cink compared the phenomenal green at the third hole here to Augusta National’s 12th hole, where the tops of trees and water beyond make for interesting play. Resort guests enjoy the close proximity to their rooms, but the real appeal lies in just how demanding these short holes can be — a perfect primer for the longer courses on the island.
