Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, a part of the Netherlands Antilles group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, to the north of Venezuela. Located on the southern coast of Aruba, Oranjestad has been the island's capital for more than two centuries, and is known for its distinctive Dutch architectural influence, duty-free shopping and nightlife.
Built around Fort Zoutman, the town was named in honor of the Dutch royal house of Orange. Houses painted in vivid pastel shades of the Caribbean underscore the Dutch influence in ornamentation and detailing. The town's waterfront hosts cruise ships as well as local fishing boats. For a grassy spot with a view of the sea, there is the Queen Wilhemina Park on L.G Smith Boulevard, parallel to the coast, which also has a statue of the Queen, the island's erstwhile head of state.
